I Haven’t Filed My Taxes Yet! What Do I Do?

We all know it’s been a CRAZY year.  And while the IRS did give us all a break, the deadline is coming up.

October 15th will be here before you know it.  That is the last day for most folks to file their 2019 tax return.

Here are some things to keep in mind about filing:

  1. The IRS provides a FREE FILING method.  Go to:  https://www.irs.gov/filing/free-file-do-your-federal-taxes-for-free to see if you qualify.  You will need to file separately with your state, if applicable.
  2. If you know you owe taxes, pay as much as you can, as soon as you can to reduce penalties and interest.  The deadline for the tax payment was July 15th.  That date is gone.  Now the meter is running on the penalties and interest. Getting money paid ASAP will reduce these charges. Fastest way to pay: IRS Direct Pay
  3. There are exceptions for our military serving in a combat zone. (Thank you for your service!) Usually these folks have an additional 180 days.
  4. If you didn’t get around to filing an extension, you should file ASAP. This will stop the interest and penalties.
  5. Don’t miss the October 15th deadline or the dreaded Failure-To-File penalties begin.

Lastly….

FILE TO GET A REFUND!  If you are due a refund for 2019, get your money!  File NOW and use Direct Deposit, your refund will be electronically deposited into your checking or savings.  It’s the fastest way to get your money.
