Tax Preparers Found Guilty!-Be Careful Who You Hire!

Here are two recent cases from the Department of Justice. Both cases involve Tax Return Preparers operating with intent to defraud the United States of America.

Texas Woman Sentenced for Tax Fraud

It is interesting to note that the case involving the Texas woman resulted in a criminal conviction, prison time and restitution. While the Chicago preparer is being shut down through civil action.

In reviewing the details, the Texas woman appears to have raised her culpability through directly diverting fraudulent tax refunds to herself.

Here is a looking into how the Department of Justice views wayward tax preparers:

“Return preparer fraud is one of the IRS’s Dirty Dozen Tax Scams and taxpayers seeking a return preparer should remain vigilant. The IRS has information on its website for choosing a tax return preparer and has launched a free directory of federal tax preparers.”
